The AI Revolution Feels Like 1994 All Over Again

The Power Play Moshe Adir Vegas Kings

Last week, I asked an AI to help me research industry trends for a client presentation. It delivered comprehensive market data and analysis in minutes. My first thought wasn’t about the technology or the time saved.

My first thought was: “Holy shit, this feels exactly like 1994.”

Thirty years ago, I was explaining to South African business owners why they needed something called a “website.” They looked at me like I was speaking alien. “The internet is just for universities and computer nerds,” they’d say. “Our customers will never use it.” I swear, I don’t think I was a nerd…

Fast forward to today, and I’m having nearly identical conversations about AI with iGaming operators. The skepticism, the resistance, the complete inability to see what’s coming next. It’s déjà vu in the most unsettling way possible.

Today, I’m hearing the same skeptical voices about AI that I heard about the internet 30 years ago. And just like in 1994, the people asking those questions are about to be left behind.

The Same Electricity in the Air

The energy around AI right now is identical to what I felt in the early internet days. There’s this sense that everything is about to change, but nobody knows exactly how or when. The tools are crude, the interfaces are clunky, and half the time they don’t work the way you expect.

But underneath all that chaos, you can feel the raw potential humming.

In 1994, I was one of maybe a dozen people in South Africa who knew how to build a website. HTML was my secret weapon. By 1997, I was building online casinos and banking sites because I had a three-year head start on everyone else.

Today, I’m getting the same feeling about AI. The operators who figure this out first are going to have an unfair advantage that lasts for years.

Just last week, I had a business concept burst into my brain. Within an hour, I used AI to do deep research, knocked the idea back and forth, rolled it around, and went deep into all the scenarios. The result? It was a terrible idea, so I canned it within the hour. Imagine if I never had AI, I could have spent years and loads of money figuring that out.

Why Operators Are Terrified

Here’s what’s keeping iGaming operators awake at night: AI isn’t just another technology they need to integrate. It’s a fundamental shift in how players expect to be treated, how content gets created, and how businesses operate.

Remember when Blockbuster thought Netflix was just another competitor? That’s exactly how some operators are viewing AI-powered personalization right now. They see it as a nice-to-have feature instead of the table stakes it’s about to become.

Players are already getting used to AI recommendations on streaming platforms, AI assistants on their phones, and AI-powered customer service everywhere else. When they come to your casino or sportsbook and get the same generic experience everyone else gets, they notice.

In 1994, if you wanted market research, you hired consultants, waited weeks, and paid thousands of dollars. Today, AI can compile industry data, competitor analysis, and trend reports in hours.

But here’s what terrifies operators, their competitors now have access to the same baseline intelligence that used to require entire research teams. The barrier to entry for comprehensive market analysis just disappeared.

I remember when live chat was revolutionary in iGaming. Operators who offered it had a massive advantage because players could get help instantly instead of waiting for email responses.

AI customer service is the same leap forward. Players can get complex questions answered immediately, in their own language, with perfect accuracy. The operators clinging to traditional support models are about to look as outdated as those early sites that only offered email contact forms.

What 1994 Taught Me About Technology Adoption

Back in the internet’s early days, I watched three types of businesses:

  • The Pioneers jumped in immediately, made mistakes, learned fast, and built unassailable advantages.
  • The Pragmatists waited to see how things developed, then moved quickly once the path was clear.
  • The Skeptics dismissed the whole thing as a fad until their competitors were eating their lunch.

I was a major skeptic when it came to crypto. I thought, just like Black Friday, it would be shut down, regulations would swing into play, and it would be very much controlled.

How wrong I was.

In iGaming, the Pioneers were companies like Microgaming and Cryptologic. They built the first real online casino platforms and dominated for years.

The Pragmatists included companies like Microgaming when it came to poker. Despite having the casino market lead, they watched from the sidelines and initially didn’t believe online poker was viable until companies like PartyPoker already owned the largest share of the market.

The Skeptics? Most of them don’t exist anymore.

The AI Adoption Patterns I’m Seeing

After 30 years of watching technology transform industries, I can spot the patterns. Here’s what I’m seeing in iGaming right now:

  • The Smart Money is Moving: The operators I work with who have the strongest balance sheets are quietly investing in AI infrastructure. They’re not making big announcements or flashy demos. They’re building the foundation for what comes next.
  • The Platform Wars Are Starting: Just like the early internet saw battles between different web technologies, we’re seeing AI platform wars begin. Operators who pick the wrong AI partners now will have to rebuild everything in two years.
  • The Talent Grab is Underway: Companies are desperately hiring anyone with real AI experience. It’s exactly like the early web development days when knowing HTML made you instantly valuable. My son wants to leave school and become a doctor, I wish I could convert him into an AI professor!

Why This Feels Different But Familiar

The internet revolution took about a decade to really transform business. AI is moving faster.

In 1994, it took me weeks to research and understand a new market before I could even start building. Today, I can gather comprehensive market intelligence and competitive analysis with AI assistance in a few hours. The feedback loops are incredibly fast, which means the competitive advantages happen quicker too.

But the human psychology is identical. Most operators are waiting for someone else to prove that AI works in iGaming before they commit resources to it. They want case studies and ROI data and competitor analysis.

By the time all that evidence exists, the window for gaining an early advantage will be closed.

Here are Three AI Opportunities I know Gambling Operators are Missing:

Hyper-Personalization at Scale – Every player interaction can now be tailored to individual preferences, playing patterns, and risk profiles. We’re not talking about basic segmentation anymore. We’re talking about AI that knows a player better than they know themselves.

Customer Service Revolution – AI can handle complex player queries instantly, in multiple languages, 24/7. Players can get account issues resolved, bonus questions answered, and game rules explained without waiting for human agents. The operators clinging to traditional support models are about to look as outdated as those early sites that only offered email contact forms.

Predictive Player Management – AI can identify players likely to churn before they stop playing, detect problem gambling patterns before they become serious, and optimize bonus offers before players even ask for them.

Back in the early internet days, the companies that succeeded weren’t necessarily the ones with the best technology. They were the ones who understood how technology could solve real business problems.

The same thing is happening with AI. The operators who win won’t be the ones with the most sophisticated AI systems. They’ll be the ones who use AI to create better player experiences, more efficient operations, and stronger competitive moats.

What I’m Telling Vegas Kings Clients

When operators ask me about AI strategy, I tell them the same thing I told clients about the internet in 1997: Start now, start small, and start learning.

You don’t need to transform your entire operation overnight. But you need to begin understanding how AI can improve your player acquisition, retention, and lifetime value. Every month you wait is a month your competitors might be getting ahead.

The operators who are experimenting now, making mistakes now, and learning now are building the expertise they’ll need when AI becomes table stakes in iGaming.

I’ve been building digital experiences for three decades, and I can tell you with certainty: we’re at another 1994 moment. The technology that seems experimental today will be essential tomorrow.

The internet didn’t just change how we do business, it changed what business was possible. AI is going to do the same thing.

The question isn’t whether AI will transform iGaming. The question is whether you’ll be leading that transformation, or scrambling to catch up to competitors who started earlier.

In 1994, I was excited about the internet because I could see the potential that others missed. Today, I’m excited about AI for the same reason, I am living and breathing it. The possibilities are endless, and we’re just getting started.

But just like in 1994, the window for gaining an early advantage won’t stay open forever.
