In 2001, I watched as a painfully shy programmer walked into an affiliate conference clutching his laptop. Six months later, he arrived in a Ferrari, surrounded by casino executives hanging on his every word.
This transformation wasn’t unusual in the early days of iGaming affiliates, a time when a basic understanding of SEO and a simple website could generate life-changing commission streams. Having witnessed this industry evolve over two decades, I’ve seen both the golden era and the challenging reality of today’s affiliate landscape.
The Early Days of iGaming Affiliates
The iGaming affiliate model began in the late 1990s and early 2000s, coinciding with the rise of online casinos and sportsbooks. During this period, operators quickly realized that leveraging third-party marketers to drive traffic was an effective strategy.
Affiliates, often SEO specialists or website owners, capitalized on this opportunity by building review sites, tipster blogs, and comparison portals to attract players and earn commissions.
Back then, the industry was wide open as SEO was relatively easy, player acquisition costs were low, and regulators had yet to clamp down on marketing practices. Early affiliates enjoyed substantial success, often earning lifetime revenue shares from referred players, which allowed them to generate recurring income with minimal overhead.
Many of the top-earning affiliates were nerdy characters who were the earliest techies. I recall one particular affiliate who showed up to our first meeting in worn-out sneakers and a faded t-shirt. Within a year, he was hosting lavish parties on yachts in Monaco. I met many of them at the early affiliate conferences, witnessing their transformation firsthand. Suddenly, they were starting to earn a fortune and you would see them coming out of their shells, driving fast cars and being treated like kings by the operators.
Back in the day, I was friends with many of the top VIP managers who also looked after the casino’s top affiliates. These managers had to live in the gym just to carry the weight of those massive credit cards. I was right there with them at the best, most snobbish restaurants when they used to impress us and order multiple of every dish on the menu. I was fed a Tomahawk steak wrapped in Gold Leaf. Will never forget that! It was insane and we never made a dent in the food.
On one trip, we arrived in Vegas and one of the affiliates had lost their luggage. As a result, the affiliate manager took us on the biggest shopping spree in the Caesars Palace shopping mall and we stuffed all the new clothes into a new Boss suitcase. The affiliate had never seen such clothing, but ended up being the most stylish cat in the room!
BTW, 2 days later his luggage was found.
Nowadays, affiliates get excited when the affiliate program gives them a free cell phone charger or taken for a nice dinner. But in the earlier days, you were sent cars and international VIP experiences as part of the affiliate program. I remember one operator who flew top affiliates by private jet to a Formula 1 race, complete with paddock access and dinner with drivers, just to secure better placement on their websites!

The Boom and the Challenges
As the iGaming industry matured over the years, the affiliate space became increasingly competitive. A few key trends shaped its evolution:
Competitive SEO – Search engines, especially Google, became more sophisticated with algorithm updates like Panda and Penguin, making it harder to rank affiliate sites without significant investment in content, backlinks, and user experience. Sites that once dominated with minimal effort were suddenly scrambling to rebuild their traffic.
Regulatory Tightening – Many markets introduced strict compliance requirements, limiting how affiliates could advertise and forcing them to obtain licenses in some jurisdictions. I watched numerous successful affiliates exit the UK market entirely when the UKGC tightened its rules around affiliate marketing language and required shared responsibility.
Affiliate Consolidation – Larger affiliate networks and media companies began acquiring smaller affiliates to expand their traffic reach and leverage economies of scale. Companies that started as one-person operations were suddenly valued at tens of millions.
Commission Structures – While revenue share deals still exist, many operators began favoring cost-per-acquisition (CPA) models or hybrid deals, which affected affiliates’ long-term profitability. The lifetime value promise that built many affiliate fortunes slowly eroded.
The 2025 Landscape
Today, the iGaming affiliate space is still flourishing, but success requires a more strategic approach. Some key developments include:
Diversification Beyond SEO – Successful affiliates are investing in paid media, social media, other search engines like YouTube or TikTok, and influencer marketing to acquire traffic. The days of relying exclusively on organic Google traffic are largely behind us.
Compliance as a Barrier to Entry – Regulated markets require adherence to strict guidelines, favoring well-established affiliates with legal expertise. I’ve watched smaller affiliates partner with compliance specialists just to navigate the complex regulatory landscape in markets like the US.
Technology & Data Utilization – Leading affiliates now use advanced analytics, AI-driven content strategies, and CRM tools to optimize conversions and maximize player lifetime value. One affiliate I work with increased conversions by 30% simply by implementing advanced user journey tracking and personalization.
Hybrid & Alternative Revenue Models – Some affiliates have shifted towards subscription-based premium content, paid media arbitrage, and direct media sales instead of relying solely on traditional commission structures. The most innovative have built entire ecosystems around their affiliate businesses.
The Future of iGaming Affiliates
As the industry continues to evolve, affiliates who adapt will remain competitive and in the top. Here are some future trends I recommend watching:
Further Market Consolidation – Larger affiliates and media giants will continue acquiring smaller players to dominate traffic channels. I expect to see fewer but larger affiliate businesses controlling the majority of the market within five years.
Rise of Niche & Localized Affiliates – With increased regulation, hyper-focused regional sites will gain prominence in specific markets. I’m already seeing specialists in emerging regulated states in the US outperforming larger generalist sites despite smaller budgets.
Growth in Emerging Markets – LatAm, Africa, and certain Asian regions present new opportunities for affiliates as regulatory frameworks evolve. Brazil, in particular, is becoming the new gold rush for many affiliates I speak with.
Blockchain & Web3 Affiliates – Crypto casinos and blockchain-based betting platforms may open new affiliate revenue streams. The transparency offered by blockchain technology could revolutionize how affiliate commissions are tracked and paid.
AI-Powered Marketing – AI will play a crucial role in content creation, user personalization, and predictive analytics to improve conversions. The affiliates investing in these technologies today will likely be the market leaders tomorrow.
The Road Ahead
The iGaming affiliate landscape I entered 20 years ago is nearly unrecognizable today. While the days of gold-leaf steaks and shopping sprees at Caesar’s Palace have faded, new opportunities continue to emerge for those willing to adapt. The operators who once treated affiliates like royalty now scrutinize ROI with scientific precision, but the fundamental value exchange remains the same.
As you navigate this industry, whether as an affiliate, operator, or investor, remember that anticipating the next shift is more valuable than mastering current conditions. The iGaming affiliate industry has come a long way from its Wild West beginnings that I experienced over two decades ago. While challenges like regulation, increased competition, and changing operator terms have made it tougher, opportunities still exist for those who innovate and adapt.
